Genus: Varanus
Small to extremely large lizards with long heads and necks, narrow snouts, well-developed limbs with 5 strongly clawed digits, deeply forked tongues and thick, loose-fitting skin with tough granular scales. there are no spines on the body, through some spp. have spiny tails. Widespread over most of mainland Australia, but absent from Tas. The majority occur in the northern and arid regions, with some localities supporting up to 10 different spp. In temperate southern areas, numbers drop to 1 or 2.

Varanus gouldii
Laterally comprised tail. Colouration very variable: light yellow to blackish brown with dense dark speckling and pale spots, many dark-centred any many clustered. A prominent pale-edged dark stripe runs back from eye. Basal portion of tail dark with narrow pale bands; terminal third to quater of tail cream to yellow and patternless. Throat often streaked with grey. Other dark ventral markings, if present, not arranged on transverse rows. Most widespread and abundant monitor, found over most of mainland Australia. Forages widely over most dry open habitats. Terrestrial. Shelters in deep sloping burrows. Often confused with V. panoptes, but much less robust.
