Genus: Aspidites
Two large robust spp., unique in lacking heat-sensory pits. Head narrow, not markedly distinct from neck, with head shields enlarged to form symmetrical plates. Eyes with dark irises. Pattern comprises simple bands. Endemic to Australia, from semi-arid to arid interior to subhumid n. Terrestrial, sheltering in soil cracks, abandoned burrows, hollow logs and rock crevices. Diets consist mainly of reptiles, including venomous snakes, but they also eat mammals and birds. this preference for reptiles is cited as a likely reason for the narrow head and the absence of heat-sensory pits.

Aspidites ramsayi
Pale brown, yellowish brown, reddish brown to olive, with numerous irregular darker bands. Juv. have a conspicuous dark patch above each eye, a feature normally lost on adults, but retained to adulthood in pops from se. interior of Qld and sometimes those from central Australia. Head, neck and throat never black. Subhumid to arid interior, from nw. cost to about Moonie and Tat districts, southern Qld. Also present in sw., where land-clearing and possible predation by feral animals has caused serious declines. woodlands, heaths and shrublands, often with spinifex. Shelters mainly in abandoned monitor and mammal burrows and in soil cracks.
