Long-nosed Ta-ta Dragon

Amphibolurus gilberti
Category: Category 4
Care Sheets:

Genus: Amphibolurus
Seven moderate-sized spp. with long limbs and tails and 1-5 crests of slightly enlarged to spinose scales (a nuchal and vertebral crest, and sometimes 1-2 dorsal crests on each side). On some spp. the nuchal and vertebral crests can be raised. Tympanum exposed. Pores present but relatively few (on each side, 1-11 femoral and 1-3 preanal). Pattern usually includes 2 broad pale dorsal stripes or series of blotches. Largely associated with woodlands in temerpate to semi-arid southern areas, and riverine vegetation in the interior and tropical n. Partially arboreal, often perching on trunks and limbs. These swift, alert dragons run on hindlimbs when alarmed.

Amphibolurus gilberti
One crest, a well-developed spinose nuchal crest continuous with a vertebral row of enlarged scales. Remaining scales relatively small and uniform, with the keels of dorsal scales parallel to midline. Shades of grey, reddish brown to black with 2 broad pale dorsolateral stripes from eye or ear to hips, discontinuous with broad white strip along lower jaw from chin to side of neck. Dark bars sometimes present on back, often indicated by notches along inner edges of pale stripes. Pattern brightest and crests largest on mature males. Woodlands and river margins. The colloquial name Ta-ta Dragon refers to its habit of arm-waving, common to juv. and adults of both sexes.
