Chlamydosaurus kingi
Category: Category 4
Care Sheets:

Genus: Chlamydosaurus
Chlamydosaurus kingi
Sole member of genus. Very distinctive, with a loose frill of scale skin attached to the neck. At rest it folds like a cap over the neck and shoulders, erect, it stands at 90 degrees to encircle the head and neck. Frill colour variable. WA and NT lizards have red or orange in the frill while those from Qld are grey. Tropical woodlands of northern and eastern Australia, s. to Brisbane. Arboreal. Seldom encountered during dry season, presumably remaining in the canopy. Frequently seen during wet season, perching 1-2m from ground on trunks of standing rough barked trees and often descending to ground after rain. Runs erect on hind limbs dashing to the nearest tree when disturbed. If confronted, the frill is suddenly erected (up to 30cm across) and the mouth gaped, presenting a startling change in colour and form. the frill is also erected during social displays. Like most cryptic arboreal dragons, frilled lizards slide slowly from view when approached.
