Genus: Nephrurus
Nine plump-bodied spp. with large deep heads and slender limbs. Digits short, clawed and padless with small spinose subdigital lamellae. Original tails terminate in a unique spherical knob. Scales small and granular mixed with low tubercles, or with spines arranged in rosettes comprising large conical tubercles surrounded by small tubercles. Dry tropics to arid zones. Terrestrial, dwelling by day in burrows (their own or those of other animals) and foraging at night in open spaces between low vegetation. Diets include arthropods (often incl. scorpions) and small geckos. When threatened they raise their bodies and lunge at their aggressor uttering a loud wheezing bark.

Nephrurus levis
Tall moderately slender to plump and heart-shaped, with enlarged white tubercles. Body and limbs bear small tubercles. Pale pinkish brown to dark purplish brown with 3 pale bands: across the base of head, across neck, and back from about level of shoulder to midline. Ssp. has rostral scale about as broad as mental scale. Arid, usually sandy regions of all mainland states except Vic.
