Two plump-bodied spp. with large deep heads, plump tails and slender limbs. Digits short, clawed and padless with enlarged transverse lamellae. Tails squarish to carrot-shaped; original tail-tips tapering. Scales small and granular mixed with low tubercles. WSF to DSF heaths and shrublands. Terrestrial, sheltering by day under rocks, logs or in burrows (their own or those of another animals) and foraging at night in open spaces between low vegetation. Diets include arthropods and smaller geckos. when threatened, they raise their bodies and lunge at their aggressor, uttering a loud wheezing bark.
Underwoodisaurus milii
Original tail carrot-shaped. Pink to dark purplish brown and with many cream to yellow spots, each centred on a tubercle. Original tail black with 5-6 white bands. Regenerated tail heart-shaped, with little pattern. From Rockhampton, Qld to just north of Shark Bay WA. Isolated population in West Angelas and Packsaddle Ra. in WA Pilbara. Occupies various habitats including DSF, shurb-lands and rock outcrops, extending into temperate forests in some areas. Can be locally abundant up to 13 recoded beneath granite slab in northern Vic.
