Four small to very small spp. (including the world's smallest python), rarely exceeding 1m, with head scales enlarged to form symmetrical plates, heat-sensory pits present on some lower labial scales but none in rostral, 3 or more loreal scales and prominent to weak pattern of dark blotches on transverse bars on pale ground colour. Widespread across northern two thirds of Australia, normally in dry to well-drained habitats. through often found in sparsely timbered areas, numbers are highest where rock outcrops, and particularly caves, are present. Except the smallest sp. A. perthensis, which eats mainly geckos, adults have broad diets, including mammals such as bats or mice, plus birds, lizards, frogs and even other snakes. Populations sharing caves with bat colonies can often be found around cave entrances as dusk, seizing bats as they pour forth into the night.

Pattern usually prominent and including pale ventrolateral line. Spp. has 260 - 302 ventral scales and usually 6th and 7th upper labial scales contacting eye. Pale brown, yellowish brown to cream, irregularly marked with numerous darker brown to reddish brown, smooth-edged, circular to elongate blotches. Widespread in outcrops, escarpments and woodlands. Ssp. is restricted to western half of WA.
