Fourteen moderately small to large, dorsally depressed spp. with tails ranging from moderately long, slender and round in cross-section to robust and flattened. Scales uniform, smooth and velvety in texture, giving rise to the common name. Subdigital lamellae enlarged, single at base, divided distantly and terminating in a pair of large plates. Colour and pattern are often striking, and usually distinctive for each spp. Widespread through Australia. These agile climbers are arboreal, rock-inhabiting or both, sheltering under loose bark or rock slabs, in hollows and crevices. Several spp. are often associated with human dwellings.

Oedura marmorata
Variable, banded to spotted, tail slender and round in some populations, plump and depressed in others. Dark purplish brown with 5-6 pale bands, narrower than dark interspaces, between nape and hips. Juv. has broad, prominent, sharp-edged bands without spots, with age these develop darker centres and ragged edges and tend to break up, with pale spots developing in intervening areas, sometimes overriding patterns. Extends disjunctly from interior of NSW to western WA. Occurring in a variant of timbered to rocky habitats. Arboreal and rock-inhabiting.
