Thirty moderate to extremely large, robust spp. with 4 well-developed limbs, each with 5 digits; 4th toe much longer than 3rd. Lower eyelid moveable, lacking a transparent disc, ear-opening with anterior lobules, parietal scales separated and body scales smooth, keeled to extremely spiny Widespread. Various forms and lifestyles, from spiny spp. which wedge themselves firmly into crevices in rock or wood to smooth-scaled excavators of simple to complex burrow systems, and enormous skinks that bask in sunny RF clearings and dash noisily for cover when alarmed. Omnivorous live-bearers. Most diurnal; some nocturnal in hot weather; at least one mainly nocturnal.
Egernia kingii
Very large, with several weak keels on each dorsal scale. Colour and pattern range from black to dark grey, brown or olive; patternless or with few to numerous small pale spots of varying intensity. Found in WA, on mainland to Hutt R. and east to Duke of Orleans Bay. Most abundant on offshore islands, to Three Bays Is and to Archipelago of the Recherche. Rock outcrops and coastal heaths or shrub-lands on sand or limestone, sheltering in crevices or burrows, including those of penguins and shear waters. Frequently feeds on eggs in sea bird rookeries.
