Six moderate to very large spp. with relatively short limbs and weakly to strongly dorsally depressed bodies. Tympanum exposed. Many spines over body, limbs and tail, including a row across base of head, a row at read edge of lower jaw, extending across throat to form a 'board' in most spp., and prominent long spines along flanks. Widespread over most of Australia, including many urban areas. Semi-arboreal, perching on limbs, stumps and fence posts. Omnivorous, consuming invertebrates, small vertebrates, foliage, fruits and flowers. When harassed, flattens body, extends beard and gapes mouth to reveal yellow or pink interior.
Pogona minor minor
Variable with poorly developed 'beard' (spines confined to read edges of jaw and not extending across throat), a widely spaced row of spines in a straight line across base of head and only 1 row of long spines along flanks. Ssp. is moderately slender and narrow headed, with a longitudinal row of spines along each side of nape. Interior of mouth pinkish white. Grey to greyish brown with 2 rows of pale blotches between nape and hips, occasionally coalescing to form a wavy broken stripes and sometimes joined by weak narrow transverse lines. Found in woodlands and shrub-lands from western half of SA to WA, to western Kimberley but excluding the Nullabor and lower sw.
