Thirty moderate to extremely large, robust spp. with 4 well-developed limbs, each with 5 digits; 4th toe much longer than 3rd. Lower eyelid moveable, lacking a transparent disc, ear-opening with anterior lobules, parietal scales separated and body scales smooth, keeled to extremely spiny Widespread. Various forms and lifestyles, from spiny spp. which wedge themselves firmly into crevices in rock or wood to smooth-scaled excavators of simple to complex burrow systems, and enormous skinks that bask in sunny RF clearings and dash noisily for cover when alarmed. Omnivorous live-bearers. Most diurnal; some nocturnal in hot weather; at least one mainly nocturnal.
Egernia napoleonis
Relatively flat, with 2-4 sharp keels on each dorsal scale. Olive brown to grey with dark spots tending to align in 3 longitudinal dorsal series, excluding a broad pale dorsolateral zone. Many small pale dots often scattered over back and flanks. Ventral surfaces salmon pink to orange-brown. Heaths, woodlands, WSF, DSF and rock outcrops from Green Head se. to Twilight Cove. Arboreal and rock-inhabiting, sheltering under bark, in rock crevices and in hollow stems of grass trees.
