Litoria caerulea
A very large, conspicuous green or olive species occasionally lightly marker with white (mainly on the flanks). the hidden portions of the limbs and flanks are commonly pale yellow. Parotoid glands and supratympanic folds are prominent and partly cover the typanum. The fingers have very broad fringes and are partly webbed, whilst the toes are webbed extensively, the limbs are of moderate length. Males 67-77mm; females 60-110mm.
Advertisement call, a deep barking sound repeated regularly; sometimes resembles timber being sawn.
Breeding biology, breeding takes place at any time between November ad March. Several thousand small, pigmented eggs are laid upon the surface of the water. The spawn sinks within 24 hours. Tadpole growth is rapid and metamorphosis is completed in four to five weeks. Tadpoles attain a maximum length of 45mm.
One of the best know of all Australian species, it is amenable to being handled and is extremely popular in zoos and as a private pet, both in Australia and overseas.
